As Myanmar grapples with the devastating aftermath of a powerful earthquake, Vietnam has stepped forward with a mission of solidarity and support. On March 30, 2025, 80 highly trained Vietnamese military personnel departed for Myanmar to assist in search and rescue efforts, marking another significant chapter in Vietnam’s commitment to humanitarian aid and international cooperation.
A Mission of Compassion and Strength
The contingent, consisting of experienced soldiers and rescue personnel, gathered at the Ministry of National Defense headquarters for a pre-departure briefing. General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, emphasized that this mission is a testament to Vietnam’s core values: friendship, responsibility, and unwavering support for global humanitarian efforts.
“Vietnam is always ready to be a reliable partner and a responsible member of the international community,” stated General Cuong. “We uphold the spirit of ‘loving others as we love ourselves’ and will do our utmost to assist Myanmar in this time of crisis.”
Equipped for Life-Saving Operations
Understanding the severity of the disaster, the Vietnamese military team has been fully equipped to handle complex rescue operations. Their deployment includes:
- Advanced search and rescue tools for locating survivors under rubble.
- Medical supplies and emergency provisions to provide immediate aid to those affected.
- Six highly trained search-and-rescue dogs to enhance the efficiency of locating missing persons.
- Essential logistics and relief items, ensuring self-sufficiency for at least one month.
Major General Pham Van Ty, Deputy Director of the Department of Rescue and Relief, reassured that Vietnam’s forces are among the best-trained for such missions, having gained substantial experience from previous international deployments, including the 2023 earthquake relief mission in Turkey.
Challenges on the Ground
Myanmar’s current situation presents immense challenges. The earthquake has caused severe destruction, with over 1,644 fatalities, 3,400 injuries, and 139 missing persons reported as of March 29. The actual numbers are expected to rise, with some projections estimating casualties exceeding 10,000 people.
Adding to the difficulty is Myanmar’s complex security situation, extreme heat, and severely damaged infrastructure, which will require the rescue teams to work under exceptionally tough conditions. However, Vietnam’s troops are prepared for the hardships ahead. “We see this not only as our responsibility but also as a reflection of Vietnam’s deep compassion for those in need,” said Major General Ty.
A Legacy of International Humanitarian Efforts
Vietnam’s participation in Myanmar’s earthquake relief is not an isolated act but part of a broader history of international humanitarian support. The country has previously provided aid in:
- Turkey (2023): Successfully assisting in post-earthquake search and rescue.
- Laos and Cambodia: Conducting disaster relief and flood rescue missions.
- Domestic efforts: Responding to typhoons, floods, and landslides across Vietnam.
This track record underscores Vietnam’s growing role in global emergency response and disaster relief operations.
Vietnam’s Global Spirit of Solidarity
Beyond its natural beauty and rich culture, Vietnam is also known for its strong sense of unity and humanitarianism. The deployment of 80 soldiers to Myanmar exemplifies this deep-rooted tradition of offering aid to those in need, reinforcing Vietnam’s role as a responsible and compassionate global partner.
